Holiday Traditions

765e_turkey1 Tomorrow is Turkey Day, so rather than talk shop I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my favorite holiday traditions.  First and foremost is the annual football game at the middle school.  Once a year, all of my high school buddies come together to brave the frosty hours of the early morning in search for the glory that comes with saying “I think I won, but we weren’t keeping score.”

We started the traditional game in high school, actually.  But back then we played on January 1st.  Nowadays, Thanksgiving is the only day we all know we’ll be in town visiting, so we moved the game in order to have more people there.  Last year’s score was 30 to 27.  Or it could have been 13 to 42.  I’m not quite sure …

Later in the day, the entire family convenes at my aunt’s house for dinner.  There’s the typical chaos of spending time with the younger cousins and video games, combined with being chased out of the kitchen by my aunt.  There’s always a lot of family (and great food!) there, and it’s a lot of fun!

This year, we’re adding a new tradition: camping.  After the turkey cools and we wake from our tryptophan comas, we’ll be driving to the coast for a weekend of camping, hiking, and general merry-making.  I have yet to experience coastal camping at the end of November, so I’m really looking forward to this!
