"Funny" Advertising


There’s a lot of advertising out there that’s fun, even more that’s funny, and some that’s just plain dumb.  Oddly enough, they’re all incredibly valuable.  Take Burger King’s “Creepy King,” for example.  His commercials may have started as the most pointless in the fast food industry, but they stick with you.  I know of a few people who know nothing about Burger King except for the Creepy King.  What amazing potential from one character!

On Thursday, I caught the tail-end of a television commercial featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.  On Friday, I found a handful of blogs criticizing the ad for it’s un-funniness and general uselessness.  Think of things this way – in a world of relevant, meaningful advertisements, what kind of advertisement is most likely to stick out in consumers’ minds?

The answer: Anything that breaks the mold of contemporary advertising and sticks out like a sore thumb.

    Any commercial that gives people something to talk about can be considered successful on certain levels. After all, gossiping about things/other people is the way people bond. The point is to make people TALK … and what better way than to make a cute and funny commercial?
