There’s often a disconnect between what we spend our “paid” time doing and what we spend our “free” time doing. It’s this disconnect that makes so many people despise their jobs or rejoice for the weekends — our professions are not the same as our passions.
I was working yesterday with several up-and-coming bloggers. One of the most important concepts we covered was the need for blogs to be both professionally relevant and appeal to personal passions. No one wants to read a site that only talks business; but if you also cover the things you care most apart, everyone is more likely to take a glance at your work.
I’m passionate about marketing, but that’s not the only interest in my life. I also care deeply about volunteerism and outdoors recreation. I don’t talk about them nearly as often as I should, but both are ever-present in my mind when I write a new article. From here on out, though, it’s time for me to practice what I preach — I’m going to start using more stories about both to explain marketing concepts. It’s my hope that this richer discussion will yield deeper conversations and further interaction with you, my valued readers.
On that same note, what concepts are you passionate about? If you had your way, what would I use in my illustrations to most pique your interest?
