It’s no secret that I use WordPress for the majority of my web development. It’s free, well-supported, easy to use, and built on a fantastic web programming language (PHP). Just the other day, though, I learned that Microsoft will be venturing into the realm of open source (free) content management systems with their new Oxite system. I have yet to experiment with it mainly for two reasons: 1) It’s built on ASP (a Microsoft alterntative to PHP that I don’t even begin to understand) and 2) It’s a Microsoft product.
Microsoft became the giant that it is by focusing on enterprise solutions. The Windows operating system is great for most of us, but many of its features are geared towards larger businesses, not individuals. The Office software suite, too, is geared towards business integration. Open source content management systems (CMS), though, are primarily used as blogging platforms. At least, that’s what WordPress and Movable Type are geared to.
So why would Microsoft, an enterprise megagiant, develop something for individual bloggers? I have my ideas … but I’d like to hear yours first.
