Discounts

Every store advertises sales and discounts in today’s market.  But how much value does a discount or clearance rack actually have?

I currently work in a store that sells luxury goods.  Our clearance items are 40-60% off and, for the next few days, we give an additional 20% off.  The big numbers and “Save Now” advertisements drive a lot of traffic to the store and we are liquidating a lot of old merchandise … and still making a profit from it. A little while ago, I mentioned a new perspective I had on product categorization and marketing as it applies to retail.  This is a brief summary of the new ideas I have to build anticipation for a soon-to-come series on the same topic. [Read more...]

New Update Schedule

I wanted to pass along a few updates to everyone so changes come as no surprise.

  1. Starting next week, I will begin a Monday, Thursday update schedule for the blog.  I have a lot of great content to share with you, but I want to spread it out over a longer period of time.  Chances are good that I will update more frequently, but I can only promise Mondays and Thursdays.
  2. Yesterday, I accepted a new job in Seattle.  I am looking forward to this a great deal and will give you more details after I start.  Hopefully, the only way this will affect the blog is with improved content.

Next week will start a two-week series on guerrilla marketing.  This was a popular news item in 2007, and I have gotten a few emails asking for my take on the field.  If you have anything in particular you would like my comments on, please leave your remarks and I will do my best to accommodate you.

Happy reading!

31 Days of Blogging

I finished my last post in the 31 Days of Blogging series yesterday, and I wanted to spend a minute or two recapping the entire project.

When I began this endeavor, I was averaging six unique visitors per day.  I had little content on my blog.  Search engines failed to find me.  I had a relatively unsuccessful site.  Now that the project is over, I am averaging sixty visitors per day, I have a great deal of content on the site, and search engines are directing people to me for a whole variety of reasons.  The 31 Days of Blogging project has drastically improved my website and helped me realize the power of my own brand.
